Sgraffito Workshop

Sgraffito is a traditional ceramic decoration technique in which a layer of slip (a mixture of clay, pigment, and water) is applied to the surface of the piece. Using a sharp tool, the artist scratches or carves through the slip to reveal the clay body underneath. This creates striking, high-contrast designs, with the exposed clay forming the negative space. The possibilities range from simple lines and shapes to intricate patterns and detailed imagery. The technique has been practiced for centuries and is found in cultures across the world.

The course begins with a short theoretical introduction and a live demonstration. Participants will then apply the technique themselves, working on three small, two medium, or one large (max. 15 × 15 cm) tile, prepared by themselves from rolled slabs during the first session.

*No previous experience necessary. Suitable both for beginners with no experience or for those who have experience and want to learn more about the sgraffito technique.

For those who wish to continue exploring the technique and applying it to 3D forms, we recommend our Intro to Handbuilding or Try Handbuilding courses, as well as our Studio Time to further develop you sgraffito projects.
